About The FEMA Consultant
P. Venkatesan, CA, CISA, is a Chartered Accountant who has been in practice in Chennai for about 48 years.
FERA, followed by FEMA in 1999, is the niche area in which he has been specializing over the last 30 years or so, rendering consultancy and services to foreign and Indian clients—individuals, firms and corporates(including multinationals).
The Journey since 1977
Since the commencement of practice in the year 1977, all the way to 2015, Venkatesan was the major, senior partner in P. Venkatesan & Co.
The firm was a member P.Venkatesan Affiliates, a network of CA Firms registered with ICAI, head-quartered in Madras / Chennai, Salem and Trivandrum.
Though it was a small firm , it had a wide variety of professional opportunities, challenges and achievements. In the audit space, apart from companies and firms in the private sector, it was also on the CAG's Panel for audit of government companies and had been allotted audits of public enterprises(such as Division Audit of LIC).As for the banking sector, the firm was not only on RBI's Panel for statutory branch audits but was also empanelled by several banks and was regularly carrying out a variety of assignments such as Stock Audits, Revenue Audits, Credit Audits, Special Valuation Assignments, Branch Inspections.
The firm was also practising Income Tax for individuals, firms, trusts and companies, as well as Company Law Matters.
From 1995 to 2010, Venkatesan was a consultant to the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce. This was what launched Venkatesan into his preferred and current specialization. Starting out as a FERA Consultant, he evolved into a FEMA Consultant, post 1999. This has been, by far, the most productive and satisfying part of the long journey. He has been handling a wide variety of FEMA Matters for large and medium-sized multinationals, Indian companies, branches/liaison offices of foreign companies, firms, individuals.
It is noteworthy that several CAs & CA Firms based not only in Chennai, but also other cities in TN, as well s in Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra , who are in audit/taxation practice, have been regularly referring their clients FEMA Matters to Venkatesan for expert, proactive, resolution.
The matters handled span FDI, ODI, ECB, RBI permissions and reporting in respect of branches/ liaison offices/project offices and overseas offices of Indian exporters, appearances before RBI, as well as the RBI Compounding Authorities in different cities and the Enforcement Directorate in respect of FEMA Compliances by large multinationals.
From 2015 to 2020, Venkatesan was the FEMA Partner in a medium-sized CA firm.
Since 2020, Venkatesan has been and continues to be, an independent FEMA Consultant.
Achievements
Venkatesan was a Consultant to the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce for about 15 years.
The World Bank engaged him as a consultant to carry out professional assignments in connection with some of its projects abroad.
His book, "External Commercial Borrowings - A Practitioner's Guide" has been published by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
